Where the meter to millimeter factor comes from
- The metre is the SI base unit of length, so it needs no conversion of its own: everything else in the metric system is defined against it.
- The SI prefix milli means exactly one thousandth. A millimetre is therefore defined as exactly 0.001 m, by definition rather than by measurement.
- One metre contains 1 ÷ 0.001 = 1000 millimetres. The factor is exact, so there is no rounding error to worry about at any number of decimal places.
- millimetres = metres × 1000. In practice that is a decimal point moved three places to the right: 0.02 m becomes 20 mm, 0.0762 m becomes 76.2 mm.

Common mistakes
Confusing millimetres with centimetres
This is the error behind most wrong answers here. Centi means one hundredth and milli means one thousandth, so a centimetre is ten millimetres. 0.02 m is 2 cm but 20 mm. If your answer is off by a factor of 10, you almost certainly converted to the wrong one of the two.
Millimetres are not micrometres
Milli is 10⁻³ and micro is 10⁻⁶, a thousandfold difference. 0.002 m is 2 mm, which is 2000 µm. Machining and 3D-printing tolerances are often quoted in microns, so mixing the two up turns a 2 mm gap into a 2 µm one.

Technical drawings quote lengths in millimetres even when the object is metres long, so a 2.4 m stud wall is 2,400 mm on the plan and a 0.9 m door is 900 mm. Machinists, joiners, welders and 3D-print operators all work this way, because a whole-number millimetre is quicker to set on a rule or a machine than a fiddly decimal metre.

The trap is the centimetre sitting between them. A centimetre is ten millimetres, so 0.2 m is 20 cm but 200 mm; getting those crossed leaves an answer that is a factor of ten out. When a converted dimension looks either tiny or enormous next to the real object, a stray centimetre is the usual culprit.
Microns for the fine stuff
Below the millimetre, machining and coating tolerances are often quoted in microns, where a micron is a thousandth of a millimetre. So 0.002 m is 2 mm, which is 2,000 microns; treating a 2-micron finish as a 2-millimetre one would be a thousandfold blunder. Keep the prefix straight when the work gets precise.
Reading a tape and a rule
A steel tape marked in millimetres puts a hundred graduations between each metre, which is why site measurements are called out as, say, 1,850 rather than 1.85 m: there is no decimal to mishear across a noisy workshop.
