Where the liter to gallon factor comes from
- This converter uses the US liquid gallon, which is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches.
- 231 cubic inches works out to exactly 3.785411784 litres.
- So one litre is 1 ÷ 3.785411784 = 0.2641720524 US gallons.
- US gallons = litres × 0.2641720524. So 10 L is 2.6417 US gal and 50 L is 13.21 US gal. The imperial (UK) gallon is larger, 4.54609 L, so the same 10 L is only 2.1997 imperial gallons.

Common mistakes
US and imperial gallons are 20 percent apart
A US gallon is 3.785 L; a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 L, about 20 percent bigger. So 50 L is 13.21 US gallons but only 11.0 imperial gallons. Always check which gallon a figure means before comparing fuel prices or tank sizes across countries.
Dry gallons are different again
The US also has a dry gallon (about 4.405 L) used for grain and produce. It is not the liquid gallon on this page. If you are measuring dry goods by US gallon, the volume is larger than the liquid figure shown here.
To convert liters to gallons, divide the number of liters by 3.7854. One liter equals 0.264172 gallons, and one gallon equals 3.7854 liters, so the relationship is fixed and exact. As a worked example, 10 l comes to 2.6417 gal. Enter your own figure in the converter above to get an instant answer, or use the swap button to flip the direction. This is a volume conversion, and like every tool on UnitGlide it runs locally in your browser with no account or upload required.
