Where the kilometer to mile factor comes from

  1. The mile is defined through the metric system: it is 5280 feet, and a foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so a mile is exactly 1609.344 metres.
  2. A kilometre is 1000 metres, so the ratio is 1000 ÷ 1609.344.
  3. 1000 ÷ 1609.344 = 0.6213711922 miles per kilometre, an exact figure because both units are exactly defined.
  4. miles = kilometres × 0.6213711922. So a 10 km race is 6.2137 mi, and 100 km is 62.14 mi.

Common mistakes

The statute mile is not the nautical mile

The mile on this page is the statute (land) mile of 1609.344 m. A nautical mile, used in aviation and at sea, is 1852 m, about 15 percent longer. A '10 mile' road sign and a '10 nautical mile' chart distance are not the same.

0.6 is a rough guide only

Rounding to 0.6 undershoots by about 3.4 percent. On a 42.195 km marathon that is nearly a mile out. Use 0.62137 when the distance matters, such as pacing or fuel range.

To convert kilometers to miles, divide the number of kilometers by 1.6093. One kilometer equals 0.621371 miles, and one mile equals 1.6093 kilometers, so the relationship is fixed and exact. As a worked example, 10 km comes to 6.2137 mi. Enter your own figure in the converter above to get an instant answer, or use the swap button to flip the direction.
