Where the meter to foot factor comes from
- The foot is defined against the metre: one international foot is exactly 0.3048 metres.
- So one metre is 1 ÷ 0.3048 feet.
- 1 ÷ 0.3048 = 3.280839895 feet per metre, exact because the foot is exactly defined.
- feet = metres × 3.280839895. So 5 m is 16.4042 ft and 10 m is 32.8084 ft.

Common mistakes
Decimal feet are not feet and inches
One metre is 3.2808 ft, and that 0.2808 is a fraction of a foot, not inches. To get inches, multiply the decimal part by 12: 0.2808 × 12 ≈ 3.4 in, so 1 m is about 3 ft 3.4 in, not 3 ft 2.8 in.
The US survey foot is a hair different
For everyday and international use the foot is exactly 0.3048 m. Older US land surveys used a 'survey foot' that is about two parts per million longer. It only matters over large distances, but it is why some legal land descriptions disagree slightly with a metric conversion.
To convert meters to feet, multiply the number of meters by 3.2808. One meter equals 3.2808 feet, and one foot equals 0.3048 meters, so the relationship is fixed and exact. As a worked example, 10 m comes to 32.8084 ft. Enter your own figure in the converter above to get an instant answer, or use the swap button to flip the direction.
