Where the foot to meter factor comes from

  1. One international foot is exactly 0.3048 metres by definition.
  2. That constant is the conversion directly, no reciprocal needed.
  3. metres = feet × 0.3048. The factor is exact, so the result is exact at any length.
  4. So 10 ft is 3.048 m and 100 ft is 30.48 m.

Common mistakes

Three feet make a yard, not a metre

A yard (3 ft) is 0.9144 m, close to but not the same as a metre. Treating a yard as a metre is about 8.6 cm short per yard, which adds up fast across a sports field or a roll of fabric.

Convert feet-and-inches fully first

A height like 5 ft 10 in is not 5.10 ft. Turn the inches into a fraction of a foot (10 ÷ 12 = 0.833) so it becomes 5.833 ft, which is 1.778 m. Skipping that step is the usual reason a height comes out wrong.

To convert feet to meters, divide the number of feet by 3.2808. One foot equals 0.3048 meters, and one meter equals 3.2808 feet, so the relationship is fixed and exact. As a worked example, 10 ft comes to 3.048 m. Enter your own figure in the converter above to get an instant answer, or use the swap button to flip the direction. This is a length conversion, and like every tool on UnitGlide it runs locally in your browser with no account or upload required.
