Where the celsius to Fahrenheit factor comes from

  1. Fahrenheit and Celsius are both linear scales, but they disagree on two things: where zero sits and how big a degree is.
  2. Water freezes at 0 °C but 32 °F, so the scales are offset by 32 degrees at the low anchor.
  3. Between freezing and boiling there are 100 Celsius degrees but 180 Fahrenheit degrees, so each Celsius degree is 180 ÷ 100 = 9/5 of a Fahrenheit degree.
  4. °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. So 37 °C (body temperature) is 98.6 °F, 180 °C is 356 °F, and 200 °C is 392 °F.

Common mistakes

Forgetting the +32 offset

Multiplying by 9/5 and stopping is the most common error. 20 °C is not 36 °F; you still have to add 32 to reach the correct 68 °F. The offset is why the two scales only meet at −40, where −40 °C equals −40 °F.

Fan ovens run cooler than the dial

A recipe's 180 °C is 356 °F in still air, but a fan (convection) oven is usually set about 20 °C lower for the same result, so 160 °C fan matches 180 °C conventional. Convert the temperature the recipe states, then adjust for your oven type separately.

Converting degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit means moving between two temperature scales that start at different points, so UnitGlide uses the exact Celsius-to-Fahrenheit formula instead of a simple multiplier. Enter any Celsius reading above and the matching Fahrenheit value appears instantly. For example, 20 °C equals 68 °F. Because each scale has its own zero and step size, small input changes can shift the result in ways a plain ratio would get wrong, which is why the formula matters. This temperature converter runs entirely in your browser, so you can check readings for cooking, weather, science or travel without sending anything to a server. The two-way table below lists common Celsius values already converted to degrees Fahrenheit, and back again, so you can scan for the number you need at a glance.

Frequently asked questions

What is 37 °C in Fahrenheit?

37 °C is 98.6 °F, the classic figure for normal body temperature. Work it out as 37 × 9/5 + 32 = 98.6.

What is 180 °C in Fahrenheit?

180 °C is 356 °F, a common moderate oven setting. 200 °C is 392 °F and 220 °C is 428 °F, the usual hot-oven range.

At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit equal?

At −40 degrees: −40 °C is exactly −40 °F. It is the only point where the two scales read the same number.

How many degrees Fahrenheit are in a Celsius?

One Celsius equals 33.8 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperature scales convert by formula rather than a fixed ratio, so this holds at that specific reading.

What is the formula to convert degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit?

Use °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. UnitGlide applies this exact formula for every value, so results stay accurate across the whole range.

How do I convert degrees Fahrenheit back to degrees Celsius?

Reverse the scale using the Fahrenheit-to-Celsius formula, or just press the swap button in the converter above to flip the direction instantly. One Fahrenheit corresponds to -17.2222 degrees Celsius at that point.

Is this Celsius to Fahrenheit converter accurate?

Yes. It uses the standard SI temperature scale formulas, and all math runs in your browser so nothing is rounded away on a server. For everyday use the displayed precision is more than enough.
