Where the gram to ounce factor comes from

  1. The avoirdupois ounce is one sixteenth of the international pound, and the pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg.
  2. So one ounce is 0.45359237 ÷ 16 = 0.028349523125 kg, which is 28.349523125 grams.
  3. Going from grams to ounces divides by that: 1 ÷ 28.349523125 = 0.0352739619 ounces per gram.
  4. ounces = grams × 0.0352739619. So 100 g is 3.5274 oz and 250 g is 8.8185 oz.

Common mistakes

Weight ounces, not fluid ounces

This page converts grams (mass) to weight ounces. A fluid ounce is a volume and does not belong here: 100 g of flour is 3.53 oz by weight but takes up far more than 3.53 fl oz of space. Use grams-to-ounces only for weight.

Precious metals use the heavier troy ounce

Gold and silver are priced per troy ounce, which is 31.103 g, not the 28.35 g avoirdupois ounce used for food and post. So 100 g of gold is 3.215 troy oz, not 3.53. Match the ounce to what you are weighing.

To convert grams to ounces, divide the number of grams by 28.3495. One gram equals 0.035274 ounces, and one ounce equals 28.3495 grams, so the relationship is fixed and exact. As a worked example, 10 g comes to 0.35274 oz. Enter your own figure in the converter above to get an instant answer, or use the swap button to flip the direction.
