Where the acre to square meter factor comes from
- The acre is a customary unit built on the international yard, which the 1959 international yard and pound agreement fixed at exactly 0.9144 m.
- An acre is 4840 square yards, and a square yard is 0.9144² = 0.83612736 m².
- So one acre is 4840 × 0.83612736 = 4046.8564224 m², exactly. Historically that came from a chain (22 yards) by a furlong (220 yards), the strip a team of oxen could plough in a day.
- square metres = acres × 4046.8564224. Two mental anchors: an acre is a square of about 63.6 m on each side, and it is close to an American football field with the end zones left off.

Common mistakes
Square metres, not metres squared in the loose sense
0.5 acre is 2023.43 m² of area. That is a plot roughly 45 m by 45 m, not 45 m in any single direction. Land listings that quote a frontage in metres and an area in m² are describing two different things, and area scales with the square: doubling both sides of a plot quadruples the acreage.
The US survey acre lingers in old deeds
The retired US survey foot gives an acre of about 4046.8726 m², roughly 0.016 m² larger than the international acre used here. NIST retired the survey foot at the end of 2022. The gap is irrelevant for a garden but reaches several square metres across a large ranch or a section of farmland.
To convert acres to square meters, multiply the number of acres by 4046.86. One acre equals 4046.86 square meters, and one square meter equals 0.000247 acres, so the relationship is fixed and exact. As a worked example, 10 ac comes to 40468.56 m². Enter your own figure in the converter above to get an instant answer, or use the swap button to flip the direction.
