Common mistakes
The US survey acre is a different (retired) unit
Until recently the United States kept a second acre based on the US survey foot, about 4046.8726 m², roughly 0.016 m² larger than the international acre. NIST and NOAA retired the US survey foot on 31 December 2022, so new work uses the international acre shown here. Old US land deeds and survey records may still rest on the survey value, which matters for large parcels but is invisible on a suburban plot.
A hectare is not a square kilometre
A hectare is 10 000 m² and a square kilometre is 1 000 000 m², so it takes 100 hectares to make one square kilometre. Farm and forestry areas are quoted in hectares, national and regional areas in square kilometres, and mixing the two misstates land size by a factor of 100.
