Gauge pressure versus absolute pressure
A tyre gauge reading 2.4 bar means 2.4 bar above atmospheric pressure, so the absolute pressure inside is about 3.41 bar. Weather reports, by contrast, quote absolute pressure. The conversion factor of 100 is the same either way, but the reference point is not, and that is the part that catches people out.
A bar is close to an atmosphere, not equal to it
One standard atmosphere is 101 325 Pa, or 1.01325 bar. The bar was chosen as a round 100 000 Pa precisely because it sits near sea-level air pressure, but the 1.3 percent gap matters in engineering. Millibars (mbar) used in meteorology are simply hectopascals: 1 mbar = 1 hPa = 100 Pa.
